UC Irvine Extension Offers for the First Time a New Critique Workshop for Writers and Authors
Best-Selling Novelist Barbara DeMarco-Barrett Will Share Her Insight for Successful Writing
TUSTIN, CA, September 04, 2011 /Journalism and Writing PR News/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension recently announced a new weekly writing course titled, "A Critique Workshop: Works in Progress," which will be facilitated by award-winning author, Barbara DeMarco-Barrett. Each weekly session, starting Sept. 26 and concluding Dec. 5, will focus on furthering each participant's novelist skills, especially rewriting and understanding the elements of successful fiction.
"I doubted myself as a writer and as a student when I was younger," said DeMarco-Barrett. "Without the inspiration, knowledge and encouragement offered to me by several of my high school professors, I would never have become an author. I now teach the writing workshop course to offer the same encouragement and knowledge to others that I received as a young writer."
Participants will gain a broader understanding of topics such as revision, the writing process, marketing, characterization and point of view. During each session, course participants will be expected to work on chapters from a novel, and all participants will have at least three opportunities for their fiction to be critiqued. Enrollment is limited to 12 students to ensure each person is able to receive substantial feedback on his/her writing. Upon completion of the course, participants should discern strengths and weaknesses in fiction and critique work more succinctly, maintain a disciplined writing schedule, develop a deeper understanding of the elements of successful fiction and identify what literary agents look for in book proposals from new authors.
DeMarco-Barrett has become a well-known author, speaker, contributor and teacher since she published her first book, Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman's Guide to Igniting the Writer Within, in 2004. It became a Los Angeles Times best-seller and won a 2005 ASJA Outstanding Book Award. She began teaching creative writing at UC Irvine Extension in 2000, and she teaches "Jumpstart Your Writing" online for Gotham Writers Workshop, based in New York City. DeMarco-Barrett was named a Distinguished Instructor at UC Irvine Extension. She also was awarded the Literary Magnet #1 on Orange Coast Magazine's Best of Orange County list.
"We are very excited that Barbara will be sharing her experiences and knowledge of writing with us this fall," said Kirwan Rockefeller, director of arts and humanities at UC Irvine Extension. "This is a rare opportunity for eager writers to further their understanding of the successful elements of fiction writing to become successful authors themselves."
